Research Professor and Adjunct Professor


Dr. Joseph Moore holds appointments at the University of Utah as a Research Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics. His expertise is in the geology, hydrothermal alteration and geochemistry of geothermal systems. Since the mid-1970s, Dr. Moore has conducted studies on many of the world’s major geothermal fields for the DOE, private companies, and US and international organizations, including the U.N., US AID and the State of Utah. His studies have been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Moore is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Geothermics and the Board of Directors of the Geothermal Resources Council.


Dr. Moore’s current research is focused on expanding geothermal development through the creation of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). He is the Principal Investigator of the successful DOE funded Raft River, Idaho EGS Demonstration project and the Managing Co-Principal Investigator of the Utah FORGE (Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy) team. FORGE is an innovative program designed to develop new drilling, testing and heat extraction technologies for EGS development.
