Vice President Growth & Innovation Copper Group

Craig has over 30 years of experience across the mining life cycle, from exploration, to project studies, project execution and operations, including more than 28 years with Rio Tinto. His recent focus has been on establishing technical and innovation capability within the Copper & Diamonds Product Group to support productivity improvement and growth at Product Group operations and major projects, with a special emphasis on large-scale underground mining at Oyu Tolgoi and Resolution and ongoing open cut mining at Kennecott Copper.

Current Role:
Craig was appointed to the role of vice president, Operational & Technical Support in the newly created Copper and Diamonds Product Group in August 2016. Craig was recently chief officer, Growth & Innovation for Rio Tinto Copper & Coal and prior to this, managing director, Major Projects, Copper. In this new role, Craig and his team provides technical leadership at managed operations/projects at Kennecott Copper, Diavik, Argyle and Resolution and non-managed joint ventures at Escondida and Grasberg.

Craig is accountable for various studies and projects within the Copper & Diamonds, including the Resolution Order of Magnitude study and the Drainage Galleries project at RTKC and is also accountable for managing the business case of the Oyu Tolgoi Underground Project on behalf of the product group. He and his team also manage the product group’s strategic production planning and asset strategy and interface with Rio Tinto Exploration and Rio Tinto Projects. Craig is also responsible for the deployment of Copper & Diamond’s innovation strategy that prioritises and coordinates the development and application of new technology across Copper & Diamonds to drive improved safety and productivity improvement.

Craig is a Director of Turquoise Hills Resources (TRQ), the company through which Rio Tinto owns it interest in Oyu Tolgoi, Chair of the Oyu Tolgoi Technical Committee and member of the Resolution Joint Venture Committee.

• Managing director/general manager, Northparkes Mines, Parkes, Australia.

Project management, including studies and project execution, mining and processing operations, including block cave mining, resource/reserve estimation, mine and exploration geology, community and stakeholder engagement.

Business Interests / Passions:
Craig’s passion is making the most of the people and resources/assets in Rio Tinto. This involves balancing the technical challenges of large-scale mining, developing and maintaining a highly motivated and skilled workforce and leadership team, advancing new technologies that will change the business, and building a social licence to operate.
